Treasures of Slovakia Tour
July 7 - July 16, 2012 Sat., July 7 Meet at Vienna Airport by 10 am, stop to admire Trencin Castle and climb to the top or stroll the ancient square. Our 75th Treasures Tour celebration continues in the heart of Slovakia with a welcome party and toasts! (2 nights in the Spis Paradise region) Sun., July 8 Wake up to views of the Carpathians, Slovakia’s beloved Tatra Mountains. There is time for church if desired. We’ll visit Vychodna Folk Festival held under snow–capped peaks to immerse in Slovak folk dance, music, song and crafts galore! Mon., July 9 Experience Spis’s Smizany Museum which shows the daily life of your ancestors. Tour beautifully restored Kosice with a local guide to marvel at St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral, the famed Singing Fountain and more. See Saris’s Presov with its historic square and beautiful cathedrals – Roman Catholic & Byzantine, and the Orthodox Synagogue with its museum of Jewish culture. (1 night in Kosice or Presov) Tues., July 10 Zemplin County’s famed sights include Humenne’s charming palace and Michalovce’s castle museum, with a stop at the workshop of 3rd generation master potter Jan Parikrupa in Pozdisovce. Pick your plates off his wall with the dancers against the dark background or typical folk scenes. (2 nights in Bardejov, UNESCO Treasure Town) Wed., July 11 Bardejov, the Pearl of Saris is one of Slovakia’s two walled towns and a UNESCO Treasure. Tour the historic square and magnificent St. Egidius Church. Enjoy the unique icon museum and the town hall. Experience village life at the outdoor skansen museum and visit an onion-domed wooden village church with icons and stories galore. Thurs., July 12 Everyone loves walled Levoca with its historic buildings, Master Paul’s statues and old legends. And we can’t miss Spis Castle, the largest Gothic ruin in Europe. Be pulled on the dance floor with vibrant Rusyns at a celebration of wedding customs – it’s so hard to say goodbye! Admire the Beliansky Tatry mountain peaks and be pampered by the owners at our cozy chalet hotel in Zdiar (2 nights in Zdiar on the Polish border) Fri., July 13 Tour Zdiar museum; then ride a chair lift in Tatranska Lomnica to one of the most magical places in the High Tatras, time for a hike or just admire the view of all Slovakia. Take a raft ride on the scenic Dunajec River in Pieniny National Park and step into Poland. Goral boat drivers tell stories and legends. Visit Red Cloister Museum and learn of “mad monk” Cyprian who cured the locals with herbs and tried to fly from the Tatra peaks with wings of wax. Sat., July 14 Wander historic Kezmarok’s streets filled with crafts demonstrations and many treasures for sale at the largest International Crafts Festival in Europe. On our way to western Slovakia we’ll enjoy a visit to Slovakia’s best doll maker and another celebration party in Krakovany with a folk group performing especially for us. (2 nights in Bratislava, Slovakia’s Capital) Sun., July 15 Time for Church if desired. See Bratislava with a local guide to learn the history and legends; on to Bratislava Castle to take a look from the ramparts. Historic Devin Castle has Celtic roots and great views from the top. It’s fun to sample the unique black currant wine. A festive farewell dinner at our favorite quaint restaurant is a joyful ending to our 75th tour celebration!
